A Little Bio Stuff About Uncle DaveO

I'm from Minnesota originally--Rochester, to be exact. While attending the University of Minnesota (I was going to be an art teacher, I thought), in 1948 I got the folk-song bug, first from listening to Burl Ives and then from Pete Seeger and Richard Dyer-Bennet and Josh White. Got a guitar, sang to anybody who'd hold still and listen, took classical guitar lessons for a while, and onward and "upward" from there!

Drafted. Two years in Germany. Nuff sed!

On the GI Bill, I went to school to be a court reporter (high-speed machine shorthand writer), and eventually fell into a super job as an Official Court Reporter for the US District Court for the Southern District of Indiana for a short stint that lasted 36 years.

Along the line I was lucky enough to marry my wonderful wife Dorris, and we have two sons and a daughter, all grown now.

"Retired" (semi) a few years ago. Still doing some freelance reporting,
(1) just to keep life interesting, and
(2) because there is NO SUCH THING as enough money!

The Family (see the picture)

Dorris Louise (Moore) Oesterreich, who cringes when I refer to her as "my Beautiful Wife". She's an accomplished professional pianist--classical, show tunes, standards, rags. (Back row, black-and-white stripes)
Ted Oesterreich, my oldest son, who's in his mid-30s now.(Middle row, sunglasses)
Monika Smith, my daughter, early 30s. (Arms around Hans and her daughter, Nicole Lewis)
Hans Oesterreich, who is now in his late 20s. (Middle row, glasses)
David Lewis and Jennifer Lewis, Monika's other kids, and
Rachel Fields, Ted's daughter.
And then there's yours truly, not pictured.

Life After (semi)Retirement

"Dave, what are you going to do with all that time after you retire?" said friends.

Well, I'd always wanted to learn 5-string banjo, so I did, to a degree, and refreshed my folksinging, which had sort of lapsed over the years. I sing at nursing homes, senior care centers, coffeehouses, open mikes, folk festivals, farmers markets, and lots and lots of time on Paltalk. I recently finished the recording and production stages for my CD Uncle DaveO Sings: The Real Story! which (surprise!) is for sale, direct from me. Only ten dollars, ppd., in US funds, by check or money order, for twenty-three songs, fifty-four minutes of entertainment! Shipping within the US is $1.00. No credit cards or Paypal.

And then I'm an omnivorous, compulsive reader.

And I tuck in a little reporting work around the edges.
